Democratic Republic of The Congo

CARE has been present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since 1994, initially responding to a refugee crisis following the Rwandan genocide. Responding to the changing needs of most vulnerable populations in the poverty and conflict- ridden country, we have since then expanded our presence to deliver development and humanitarian response programs in protection, economic empowerment, governance and health services in conflict affected areas; and in partnership with local civil society organizations. This new strategy will see us expand our work from North and South Kivu and Grand Kasai and Maniema (where we have a temporary presence) to Ituri. Between 2018 and 2020, we reached about 4.1 million people with our development work and 6.1 million with humanitarian response. In the coming 5 years, we aim to increase this number to 4.5 million and 6.5 million – considering emergency needs in our intervention areas - respectively.
