Somalia: How One Halima's Determination Changed Her Family's Future

In the heart of Badan district, Halimo, a mother of seven, found herself thrust into the role of family breadwinner after her husband lost his job. With four boys and three girls to support, she faced an uphill battle against poverty and societal norms that discouraged women from working in public.

Despite her best efforts, Halimo's meager earnings fell short of providing even the basic necessities for her family. The weight of responsibility and cultural expectations threatened to crush her spirit. However, fate had other plans.

In a stroke of fortune, Halimo's community identified her as a candidate for skills training at the Badhan Women and Girl's Safe Space Center, supported by CARE under the USAID-funded SOMSHARP project. This opportunity marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in her life.

"When I heard I'd been selected, I couldn't contain my excitement," Halimo recalled, her eyes shining. "It felt like a gift from the heavens—exactly what I needed to create a better future for my family and myself."

The Center, known for empowering economically vulnerable women and girls, became Halimo's sanctuary of learning and growth. Over three months, she immersed herself in tie and dye techniques, quickly mastering the art.

From Student to Entrepreneur

Halimo's creativity flourished as she began crafting beautiful garments that captivated her friends and neighbors. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone through as she started selling her designs even before graduating, driven by her family's pressing needs.

"I would constantly think of how to monetize each new skill I acquired during the course," Halimo explained, showcasing her business acumen.

Post-graduation, her reputation spread rapidly. "I now earn at least $5 daily, with earnings soaring during festivals like Eid," Halimo shared proudly. "Currently, I go door-to-door selling my creations, but I dream of opening my own shop and employing fellow graduates from the Center."

A Ripple Effect of Change

Halimo's success extends beyond financial gains. She now volunteers at the Center, inspiring and empowering other women and girls to take control of their economic futures. Her journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of education, determination, and community support.

Halimo's story is more than a personal triumph; it's a beacon of hope for countless women facing similar challenges. Her resilience proves that with the right support and unwavering determination, women can overcome societal limitations and achieve greatness.

As Halimo continues to grow her business and inspire others, she embodies the change she wishes to see in her community. Her journey from struggle to success serves as a powerful reminder that every individual has the potential to rewrite their story and create a lasting positive impact on society.
