"Zimbabwe is facing the worst hunger catastrophe in 100 years. The 2024 Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee (ZimLAC) indicated that 57% of people in rural areas will be food insecure. Over 5.8 million people face the daily reality of starvation as a relentless drought, intensified by the merciless El Niño, has withered their livelihoods. Jesicca Nhamoinesu, a frail 68-year-old from Bikita district, is a haunting symbol of this crisis. Her once-hopeful fields are now barren graveyards, mirroring the despair that grips her community. The specter of the 1992 famine haunts her, a chilling reminder of the suffering she and her family endure. This is not just a statistic; it's a human tragedy unfolding before our eyes. Urgent action is demanded to prevent countless lives from being consumed by this crisis." – Patrick Sikana, CARE Zimbabwe Country Director
